Recent figures by the National Health Reporting Authority show the nation's obesity rate has ballooned, with 10.8 million Australians now classified as overweight or obese.

Dr. Steve Boutcher said visceral fat was found under the abdominal muscles, around the liver, spleen, intestines and kidneys.   

"A middle-aged, overweight person will become a diabetic, no doubt about it, unless they change their lifestyle, start exercising and lose that visceral fat," he said. 


 
"People think the dangerous fat is the fat you can hold, around the back of your arms, your hips and abdomen; but in general that's healthy fat that stores hormones and energy," he said.
 

"Not so the visceral fat - these belly fat cells secrete chemicals called cytokines, which make the liver inflamed. They also bombard the liver with free fatty acids, which can lead to the onset of type 2 diabetes."

Type 2 Diabetes: Insulin Resistance

In type 2 diabetes, the body's cells cannot take up glucose properly, leading to high levels of glucose in the blood. Insulin resistance means that although the body can produce insulin, the body's cells do not respond properly to the insulin that is made. Over time, the pancreas reduces the amount of insulin that it produces (see diagram above)


Dr Steve Boutcher said four studies had shown that if a person exercised intensively for 20 minutes, three times a week - the equivalent of one hour a week - they could reduce their waist circumference and risk of diabetes and heart disease.
